PLANTING
What should I plant in October?
Bulbs, trees, shrubs, perennials, fruit and edibles that can make good use of warm autumn soil and increased moisture.

Spring bulbs
October is a prime month for planting many spring-flowering bulbs. Good preparation and sensible depth matter more than trying to make the display complicated.
Trees, shrubs, roses and climbers
Autumn planting allows roots to start establishing before the demands of the following summer. Bare-root plants begin becoming available later in autumn and can be a cost-effective option for hedging and larger planting jobs.
Perennials
Many hardy herbaceous perennials can be planted while the soil still holds warmth and moisture. Very wet heavy ground is an exception where spring may be safer for some plants.
Fruit and vegetables
Pot-grown fruit can be planted now, and bare-root fruit can be ordered for winter. In suitable mild conditions, some overwintering broad beans and peas can also be sown.
