Working with North West weather: when to mow, prune and stay off the soil
A practical guide to adapting garden maintenance around rain, wind, frost and soft ground.

Wet ground changes the job
Very soft soil is easily compacted. Delay heavy lawn work and avoid repeatedly walking the same border route when the ground is saturated.
Wind changes pruning priorities
Loose, damaged or wind-rocked growth may need attention, but avoid unnecessary hard pruning just because a plant looks untidy. Identify the plant first and work with its normal pruning season.
Frost means wait
Do not mow frozen grass or prune tender growth immediately before a hard frost. Frozen leaves and grass blades bruise easily, and fresh cuts can be more exposed to cold damage.
KS tip: A dry working window can be more important than the date on the calendar.
